Website hosting is not the same as website maintenance

Understand the difference between keeping a server online and keeping a business website secure, current and useful.

What hosting normally provides

Hosting supplies the environment where a website runs. Depending on the contract, it may include storage, compute capacity, basic availability, backups and a control panel. These features do not automatically mean your pages, content and applications are actively maintained.

A hosting provider might keep a server available while a plugin remains outdated or a contact form stops delivering enquiries. That distinction matters when allocating responsibility.

What maintenance normally covers

Website maintenance focuses on the application and its business operation: reviewing updates, checking key forms and pages, coordinating backups, managing minor changes and tracking issues reported by users.

The exact tasks, frequency and response times must be written in the service agreement. A monthly plan should not be interpreted as unlimited development or emergency security response unless those services are expressly covered.

What to ask before buying

Ask who owns the domain, where the site is hosted, which party manages DNS, who reviews backups and who can approve a release. Confirm escalation contacts and how urgent incidents are handled outside ordinary support hours.

If both hosting and maintenance are provided by one vendor, keep the deliverables distinct on the invoice or schedule of services. This avoids ambiguity if a website problem crosses infrastructure and application layers.

Choose based on business impact

An informational brochure site may need a lighter service than a regularly updated corporate portal. Select coverage based on change frequency, user impact, integrations and the cost of downtime, not simply the number of pages.

JOBWP can scope hosting and ongoing care together or separately after reviewing the platform and its dependencies.

JOBWP publishes general operational guidance, not legal, security or tax advice. Service availability and terms are confirmed in writing.
